Master & Dynamic In Tokyo With Tyson Wheatley

Exploring the world’s various cultural hubs is a critical part of the creative process at Master & Dynamic. We recently caught up with photographer Tyson Wheatley in Tokyo and explored this incredible city with the help of a few of his favorite local Instagrammers, Yuma Yamashita (@yuma1983) and Tomoyasu Koyanagi (@10_ya). Scroll to see Tyson’s photos from the trip and read about his first hand experience in Tokyo. This collection is accompanied by Tyson’s SoundCloud playlist created exclusively for the Master & Dynamic channel.

Standing in Iidabashi Station, one of Tokyo’s busiest subway stations, an underground a labyrinth of platforms and passageways.

The mirrored entrance to Tokyo Plaza Omotesandro Harajuku. My first time visiting this space and it is definitely one of the coolest places to people watch.

Yuma watches the sun set. The Tokyo Skytree, Japan’s tallest structure, looms like a giant tripod over the city.

The Sumitomo Building looks rather unassuming from the outside and blends into the surrounding skyscrapers of Shinjuku. From the inside its three-sided shape provides one of the more intriguing look-ups in Tokyo.

Tomoyasu is one of the friendliest people I’ve ever met during my travels and a wonderful photographer.

My essentials when exploring a new urban setting.

The Tokyo International Forum, one of my favorite places to shoot and explore. The massive exhibition hall resembles an American football from the outside. From the inside, it looks like a tall sea vessel, complete with bow, stern and mast.

Exploring Shibuya Station with Yuma, right before he took us to his favorite spot for yakitori (skewered, grilled chicken) in nearby Piss Alley – a go-to spot for small dive bars and street food.

Golden hour in Shibuya – a fascinating shopping and fashion center of Tokyo. I love how peaceful Tokyo appears from an elevated vantage point.
